Google Blogoscoped reports that Gmail will be rolling out a 2.0 version shortly, faster and with better contact management than the original. Some users apparently already have the new version. InsideGoogle notes:

Email messages will be prefetched, so that when you click on them they will have already been downloaded, and will load instantly. When reading a message, you can click Next, Next, Next, and there’s no lag, speeding through a ton of messages instantly. You can even hold down the key and your mail flies by.

This sounds quite similar to the Google Reader experience. Of note is also that the new Gmail promises better integration with other Google products, like Google Docs and Calendar. Perhaps this all parallels the kind of integration that the much-anticipated “Maka-Maka,” Google’s rumored social network, will purportedly feature.
