Yahoo is displaying a new feature at the bottom of search results pages for FireFox users. Checkout the screenshot below for more details:
It appears that Yahoo is pushing downloads of the new IE 7 from Microsoft and including itself as the default search engine installed in the file menu area.

This is clearly a co-op deal page setup by Yahoo. I believe the setup file for IE 7 is actually hosted on Yahoo servers as well. This is closest thing I have seen to a graphics banner ad in a SERPs page – and is clearly targeted towards FireFox users. While not having a large impact on the results or being that obtrusive of an ad it definitely pulls into question the alliances between the search engines and the browser wars going on. Google is still packaging FireFox with its free Google Pack offering that also includes the Google toolbar.
Looks like things are heating up again in the browser wars.

How stupid, considering you can also “search directly from your browser” in FireFox. Is it just because Google is the default search engine in FireFox that Yahoo is doing this?

It’s kinda funny that the same ad doesn’t show up in IE. But, like someone said, who uses Yahoo any more?
It gets worse if you don’t use windoze. Yahoo email comes up with a warning that says “Something may be wrong with your operating system!” when I access it from Firefox on Linux. Booooogus!

People still use Yahoo? Google So kicks it’s butt, why would anyone do anything on Yahoo anyway? Yahoo blows, especially their “new, improved” message boards. They are the worst design I’ve ever seen.
Poor Yahoo – I think they’re startint to realize that they finally lost to google and are hopeing to get microsoft’s attention and get bought. Too bad for them microsoft already has msn.
Wonder if Yahoo really got so desperate that they’d do a Novell-like Microsoft partnership (i.e. piss off their own customers just for a few bucks from Microsoft)
It got me to switch back to IE and now I get my search results faster.
This is a result of the merging of Yahoo Instant Messenger and MSN Instant Messenger.
And the ad checking software is not even smart enough to check the OS before it displays the ad. Run Firefox on the Mac OS and you get the same ad. So, even the people who developed the ad were either too stoopid or lazy to even check OS.
Like I’d want IE7 anyways.
A LOT of people use Yahoo. I know people who still think you’re supposed to type the URL in the Yahoo search box. That’s who this add is targeted to.
This is also there for IE6 so its just a opened ended ad campaign for any browser other than IE7. The author really needs to do some investigation before accusing MS and Yahoo of collaborating against FireFox. I haven’t tested this in IE7 yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if its in IE7 as well so people will get the “optimized for Yahoo!” version.
What makes this “targeted at FireFox users”? Maybe it’s trying to get IE6 users to upgrade since it does not have a built-in search. Firefox has had the feature for a long time so it’s really preaching to the choir there, isn’t it?
The default Firefox homepage drives traffic to Google and Google employs several of the core Firefox engineers. So is it really surprising that Yahoo would want to push IE?
I think there are some insightful comments here thanks to all who are continuing the conversation.
I am uncertain which browsers this “campaign” is running on or not. It would be interesting to see which browsers and which countries and regions the ads show up in. I also find it interesting that Yahoo is hosting the actual download on their servers.
Some mentioned that this is a result of the Yahoo and MSN messenger deal, but this remains unconfirmed.
I would be interested to know the install rates and whether or not Yahoo would be willing to run another campaign in this same location or if it is just a one time deal.
