Microsoft Takes on Google Base with “Fremont”

Microsoft is said to be testing its own version of online classifieds, a project code-named “Fremont” that comes just six weeks after Google debuted its free Google Base service.

Fremont will begin as a small-scale beta best and will first focus on classifieds ads for products and services by individuals and companies without a presence on the Web.

“Microsoft’s version of this contributory search material seems to be more limited in scope than Google’s, which seeks out just about anything from chitchat and poetry to classified ads and personal inventions.

First Google, now Microsoft. Wonder how long before Yahoo comes out with something similar?
