Yahoo announced yesterday that it has acquired Whereonearth, a small UK company that specializes in location-based Internet services.

Yahoo plans on using the acquisition to improve both its local and mobile search services and gain competitive footing on rival Google.

Terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed.

In this post on the Yahoo Blog Vice President of Strategic Data Solutions, Yahoo! Bassel Ojjeh had this to say:

“Whereonearth’s very talented team of software engineers and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experts have worked hard to develop sophisticated technology that contains a unique combination of global data and software algorithms that make local search possible. Together, we’ll be able to provide the most geo-relevant information across all of Yahoo’s products and services.”
