Therapy, not unbridled ego is the primary motivation for most bloggers, according to a recent survey by America Online.
The study of 600 male and female bloggers over the age of 18 was conducted last this summer. It found most are not aspiring to be the next Barbara Walters or Michael Moore, but instead treat blogging as form of therapeutic self-expression.
Other interesting findings:
- When dealing with a serious personal problem, six times as many repondents prefer to blog about it or read blogs by others rather than seek professional counseling.
- Only 16% of bloggers are interested in journalism and only 8% blog in an attempt to break or expose political information.
- 66% of bloggers feel free to write about “anything and everything” and only 12% worry whether their blogs are funny & witty (so that explains it…)
- They’re not that competitive – only 13% would feel disappointed if they learned another blog attracts more readers than their own.
- The average respondent maintains two blogs and spends four hours per week updating them.
