Yet another one for the accidental screenshot files – Word on the street is that TiVo will be offering a download service whereby customers with networked DVRs will be able to check out programming before it appears on network or cable TV.
A beta test for a small group of subscribers could begin as soon as next week, with shows from the Independent Film Channel as the first transmittals.
This is a good news for TiVo, whose stock has been slipping upon reports that partner DirecTV will be breaking up with them later this year.
The manner in which the news broke is causing some concern, however. According to some, the reporter for Engadget may have been violating the terms of an NDA when he posted these screenshots, though there’s an equal contingent that says he was in the clear.
This is cool news, but I can’t help but wonder if these free downloads will only be available for what the networks and channel owners want us to see – promotions, a way to push new or failing shows, etc.) rather than truly user-controlled media.
