Why are Nigerian email scams just so…Nigerian?
There are lots of theories, but an article in BusinessWeek has a few of the most plausible.
Consider the following:
- Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation.
- English is the official language.
- Though the population is well-educated and talented, 1 out of every 4 college grads is unemployed
Even though sending out millions of emails in hopes that one rube will take the bait sounds like an arduous way to make a living, the payoff is big. Says one scammer:
“Now I have three cars, I have two houses and I’m not looking for a job anymore.”
