Fast on the heels of IBM, who released their employee blogging guidelines just over 2 weeks ago, Yahoo has published their own missive, the creatively titled Yahoo! Personal Blog Guidelines 1.0.

Among the highlights:

  • Lawyers, Look Elsewhere: Yahoo is not legally responsible for anything you say in your blog or on anyone else’s blog.
  • Shut It!: “Anything related to Yahoo! policy, inventions, strategy, financials, products, etc. that has not been made public cannot appear in your blog under any circumstances.” Also – hands off the logo, babe.
  • Mellow, Aren’t We?: Some “Best Practices” regarding employee communication on blogs are outlined, but not made mandatory. The policy says, “It’s your choice. We really mean that.”
  • “It Sucks” Is Not a Post: In what’s surely one of the first-ever uses of the word “sucks” in an employee policy document, Yahoo powers that be urge bloggers to provide some context to support their opinions.
  • The guidelines are well-written and provide strong rationale for the rules set forth. But don’t take our word for it – see what Yahoo employee bloggers Jeremy Zawodny, Russell Beattie, Jeff Boulter, and JR Conlin have to say.
