One of our engineers noticed this Vonage ad while accessing his Hotmail account. It’s an animated skyscraper peel-back banner that morphs into a fake AdSense-type ad and then back into a banner again.
We’re wondering what gives. Some possible answers:
- A banner ad with an identity crisis – ‘I’m really a text ad trapped in a banner body!’
- An attempt to save money – All the click-through of a text ad at CPM prices!
- Some sort of voodoo marketing experiment – What happens if we combine a banner ad with a text ad with a UNICORN?!?
Whatever it is, Vonage has been spending some big bucks online as of late. This ClickZ report has them as the #2 spender for the month of April 2005, spending upwards of $21 million that month alone. Now if they’d only stop spending it on this kind of crap…
