If you’re annoyed by folks who recline their seats all the way back on airplanes (thanks, I really didn’t need functional knees), try sitting next to someone watching The Hamster Dance or blabbering on about about golf scores on a Skype call.

These are both very real possibilities now that United Airlines has announced they’ll be installing wireless Internet access on their fleet, making them the first domestic airline to receive FAA approval for passengers to surf while they fly. The move is still pending FCC approval though no major problems are anticipated.

No word on how much it’s going to cost, though wi-fi access is already available on some international carriers charging anywhere from $10 for a half hour to $30 for an entire flight.

The issue of wireless devices, including cell phones, has been one of hot debate in recent years. It’s interesting that United Airlines, still on the road to recovery from the events of 9/11 (both financially and in terms of consumer trust) is among the first to dip a toe in these choppy waters.
