NowPublic is a very cool open source news site that brings together professional and amateur journalists covering news stories from all over the world. Users can suggest story ideas, add to or edit existing stories, and upload video and digital images as supplements.

Still privately held and in beta, the site just announced a partnership with On2 Technologies that will enable bloggers to post video clips from their desktop or mobile device.

A look at a test story – the Coney Island Mermaid Parade – shows some fairly respectable coverage, with nearly 50 contributed photos and a few short articles. The usability’s still a little buggy and there’s enough page clutter to make one mutter ‘It’s just too busy’ – a turn of phrase best reserved for discussing a necktie.

BTW, in case you missed out and want to see more, Flickr has some great great shots of the Mermaid Parade.
