Back off, bandwidth hogs. Yahoo! is testing an email service that allows people to share digital photos without the use of attachments that siphon off storage space and bandwidth. It’s called PhotoMail and it allows users to embed up to 300 thumbnails in the body of an email, adding borders & captions and performing limited editing functions (rotate, resize, etc.). CNET has a screenshot of what this will look like.
PhotoMail offers free unlimited storage for photos via its direct tie-in to Yahoo Photos. Yahoo Mail will continue to max out at 1GB for free users and 2GB Mail Plus users.
Right now photo-sharing is hotter than Paris Hilton’s hamburger ad, with all the major engines developing competing technologies. Google got a head start with the acquisition of Picasa and has since made several updates. MSN Search signed a deal with PicSearch, who also supports image search for Lycos & Ask Jeeves.
Then there’s other non-search rivals like Shutterfly, Ofoto, and Snapfish. PhotoMail has the added advantage of being free, unlike a similar service from MSN.
Speaking of photo-sharing, voyeuring-out on Flickr is always fun. Get ready for the weekend with this collection of random photos, all tagged “beer”.

Beer. Good. I assume you know that yahoo bought flickr.
Hey Peter,
Yea, we talked about it back in March. Though you’re right, we should have made mention in the post.
Also, beer = good. Right again.
