Sorry, Yahoo! I know you’re excited to show me your new movie recommendations, and you may even have more features, but I’m not ending things with Netflix just yet. Maybe it’s cause I’ve been with them for over a year, but Netflix knows what I need and right now you don’t. Besides, you think I’d voluntarily sit through The Notebook?? Surely, you jest.

Yahoo! just announced their partnership with ChoiceStream on a service that provides free movie recommendations to users based upon their individual tastes. Users will also be able to look at the ratings and reviews of others.

Other offerings include:

  • Recommendations for movies playing in local theatres, one-click access to local showtimes and online ticketing [rock!]
  • Recommendations for upcoming TV movies tailored to your channel line-up [Meredith Baxter Birney, look out!]
  • Personalized lists of DVDs to buy from Yahoo! Shopping [eh]
  • Ratings & reviews from other Yahoo! Movies users, the ability to send them an IM

Sign up to get your own recommendations here.

While I love, love, LOVE the user interface and the integration of the local theatres/TV listings, I may stick with Netflix for the time being. Being too busy/lazy to fill up my movie queue, I regularly get messages from NetFlix saying something to the effect of hey, add something! The friends page is where I get quite a few of my recommendations, and right now none of my friends are using Yahoo. The “other Yahoo! Movie users” it linked me to consisted of a bunch of 18 year old boys out in California. Not exactly my demographic.
