“Inappropriate” was the word used by State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer’s aides to describe the sponsored link that appeared yesterday for anyone who typed “AIG” into the Google search engine, though we think stupid might be more accurate.

AIG is the world’s largest insurer and right now it’s at the center of an investigation by Spitzer and others over some alleged shady accounting practices. The ad, which ties back to Spitzer’s campaign site, contained some not-so-nice words about AIG and ended up being
removed
yesterday afternoon.

Spitzer insists there’s no conflict of interest between his gubernatorial campaign and his duties as attorney general, though the AdWords ads certainly aren’t helping his case.

This post by John Battelle notes a new counter-Spitzer ad running on the “AIG” term.

We found a different anti-Spitzer ad (bottom one below):

and in doing so ran into an ad for Clusty that appears when you search on the term “John Battelle”. Hey John, what gives?

  1. Todd Shea says:

I want to tell you about the downfall a friend of mine, an innocent man named Daniel Panitz, Sr. Eliot Spitzer completely destroyed the life, property, livelihood and reputation of this great man and devastated his company, and hurt his employees and patients and the people of Queens and Brooklyn in ways that can’t be fully measured. My friend’s 30 years of faithful service and his business is gone now. Why? After more than three years since the nightmare began with subpoenas and subsequent felony charges from The New York State Attorney General’s Office, my friend (a genuine hero of the 9/11 relief efforts) still hasn’t had his day in court. Why? Eliot Spitzer and his thugs used their supreme power and unlimited resources to outlast my friend and destroy his life YEARS BEFORE his day in court. Why did they do that? Because my friend asserted his innocence and demanded his day in court. They knew their case is a manufactured pack of lies and exaggerations, so Spitzer’s answer to my friend’s constitutional right was arrogant and sinister action that clearly stated, “Either we win or, we win.” No conviction was needed to ruin Daniel Panitz, Sr, just an orchestrated and sustained campaign of smears, torturous intimidation, threats and illegal actions were enough to devastate an American Citizen- an extraordinary man, a compassionate man who dedicated his life to help those less fortunate, a self-made man who rose from humble beginnings, in many ways is just like you and the people that you love and care for. So much for the due process and justice guaranteed to all American citizens. I am ashamed that this could happen in the country I love, I’m ashamed that I was powerless to stop this outrage. My friend is only a shell of himself now, and his wife has suffered so horribly that she is almost unrecognizable from the woman she once was. Our troops have valiantly fought against tyranny in the last century, they’re doing it now- and Eliot Spitzer’s tactics are domestic acts of terror that have severely disrespected and undermined all the ideals our men and women in uniform fight and sometimes die trying to protect from destruction by the enemies of justice and freedom. Eliot Spitzer committed blatant extortion against my friend- I was a firsthand witness to the crime. Dan’s lawyers say he was indeed extorted but say that nobody will care. Well, I have more faith in you than they do. I want to tell you all the shocking details, and I hope you are willing to listen with an open mind and let the facts stand for themselves. I believe you will be outraged when you learn what has gone on in your country, in the very city that was brought to its knees by another form of the insidious evil that assaults humanity too often these days. Eliot Spitzer is a tyrant disguising himself as “Man of the People” and we all had better think twice before granting this deceitful, power mad grandstander more power to abuse human beings with.
