Google said yesterday it’s removing Agence France Presse news stories and photos from its Google News site, the result of a legal fight with the French news service, who wants Google to fork over a great deal of francs for damages related to alleged copyright violations.
AFP content will no longer be shown on the Google news site, in any language. There’s no formal timetable set for the removal, though it won’t happen overnight.
This could have some pretty profound (if not scary) implications for anyone who’s a publisher or blogger, whether they reap a profit from their site or not. Google’s arguing that it’s adding value, while the AFP says Google adds next to nothing since its news site looks so much like those of AFP subscribers – except that the stories are picked by software instead of a human editor
Speaking of human editors, why is Google News still featuring sites like these?
