Football Fans Choose MyYahoo!

There’s no doubt Jeeves/Bloglines is firmly entrenched as the browser of choice for the geek set. That may change if Bloglines doesn’t become more adept at appealing to newbie users, something Yahoo! seems to have gotten down cold.

Read/Write Web has an article on RSS marketshare as measured by users of the football fan site FanBlogs.com, an audience which Kevin Donahue says is ‘Joe American’, aka tilted toward the non-geek and a good representation of the average user (though his data set is a little small).

64.8% of these non-geeks subscribe to FanBlogs.com via MyYahoo. The fact that MyYahoo! buttons cover 95% of available page real estate is probably the majority of the reason behind it, but even still – Bloglines shouldn’t get too comfortable. Despite Bloglines’ formidable lead, numbers alone could allow Yahoo! to easily lock up RSS marketshare.

  1. Regarding the MyYahoo buttons, those were added in March 2005. Since the launch in 2003, we simply had orange “XML” buttons on the feed listing. Once we became aware of the skew towards MyYahoo, we added the sticker. A few weeks ago, we added the NewsGator stickers as well.

Ok, got it. Thanks for the clarification, Kevin.
