Yahoo! and entertainment network, Showtime, announced today that they’ve teamed up to stream
the first episode of “Fat Actress” simultaneously with the Showtime premiere on March 7th. Yahoo! plans to promote the series for the two weeks leading up to
the premiere by using video clips and photos across the Yahoo! network.
This is a significant announcement for at least a couple of reasons.
Much like the news that companies including Google and Ask Jeeves were giving consideration to acquiring About.com, the Yahoo!/Showtime partnership is yet another example of the convergence of content and search.
Additionally, Y! plans to leave the episode online until March 12th — five days after it premieres. Users will have the ability to watch “Fat Actress” where and when they want to over that time period. No doubt that if users express an interest in having content delivered this way, the industry will be forced to give them substantially more
controk in the future.
