The NY Times has an interesting article on the continued competition among search players big and small, focusing on recent product innovations from Google, Yahoo! and others, many of which are still in beta.

Danny Sullivan is quoted, along with reps from Google and Yahoo!. We especially like Sullivan’s Google/Yahoo! comparison: “Yahoo says, ‘Where is the mountain? Let’s climb it. Google says, ‘Maybe we want to go up the mountain and maybe we want to go surfing.’ ” Skiing is probably more accurate.

Google remains at the top of the heap, according to a survey by Keynote Systems. Perceived quality on the part of users is the key, but Yahoo! and MSN are catching up and more and more users remain open to exploring different options.

Like Fred Wilson, most of us here use a blended approach when it come to search, with Google or Yahoo! as the mainstay and sites like Bloglines, Feedster, Technorati, and del.icio.us gaining more of our attention share daily.

Though geeks like us are probably not the best indicator of society at large, this article supports the idea that the big guys are losing some of their grip on the search market and is proof that, as Seth Goldstein put it, “A lot of the real innovation is happening under the radar.”
